We are looking to make a strong addition to our growing team in our Environmental and Food Quality department.
About the Role:
As part of our overall commitment to food quality, safety, and operating in a socially and environmentally responsible fashion, Nutri-Nation is looking for an individual with experience and expertise in SMETA initiatives, to improve our programs and procedures, as well as support the Quality team as a whole.
*Please note, that this position involves some walking throughout the day
and is not a laboratory or solely an office position*
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, maintain, and continually improve the organization’s Environmental Management System (EMS) in alignment with international best practices (e.g., ISO 14001 principles where applicable), local/regional regulations, customer requirements, and SMETA 4-pillar environmental standards.
- Identify and monitor all applicable environmental legislation, permits, licenses, and regulatory obligations at local, regional, and (where relevant) national levels; ensure timely compliance and renewal.
- Interpret and integrate customer-specific environmental requirements into operational policies, procedures, and performance targets.
- Lead preparation for and participation in SMETA 4-pillar audits (focusing on the Environment pillar), including addressing extended environmental assessment requirements such as:
- Efficient resource management (energy, water, raw materials)
- Waste management, segregation, recycling, and proper disposal (including hazardous waste)
- Emissions control and monitoring (air, greenhouse gases, wastewater)
- Pollution prevention measures and emergency response planning
- Maintenance of relevant environmental records, registers, and data
- Conduct Environment Impact Assessments for site and supply chain and implement mitigation steps for negative environment impacts.
- Monitor and mitigate the site’s impacts on biodiversity.
- Conduct regular internal environmental and food safety audits, inspections, risk assessments, and gap analyses to identify non-conformities and improvement opportunities.
- Develop and implement environmental objectives, targets, programs, and action plans to reduce environmental footprint (e.g., waste reduction, energy efficiency, water conservation).
- Collect, analyze, and report environmental performance data (KPIs) including resource consumption, waste generation, emissions, and compliance metrics; prepare reports for management, customers, and regulatory authorities.
- Provide environmental training, awareness programs, and technical guidance to employees, contractors, and relevant stakeholders.
- Investigate environmental incidents, near-misses, and complaints; lead root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective/preventive actions.
- Stay updated on evolving environmental regulations, SMETA methodology changes, industry best practices, and emerging sustainability trends.
- Liaise with regulatory authorities, external auditors, certification bodies, customers, and suppliers on environmental and food safety matters.
- Ensure that all quality assurance activities are compliant with SQF, HACCP, GMP, organic, government, and internal regulations.
- Ensuring that all practices are conducted in a food safe manner and any food safety issues are brought to Quality Assurance or Senior Management
- Monitor and mitigate non compliances related to GMP and food safety and give detailed reports.
- Investigate food safety incidents, near-misses, and complaints; assist with root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective/preventive actions.
- Provide training and awareness on company policies and practices related to Food Safety.
- Other related duties that may be assigned from time to time by management.
- This position involves detailed, technical writing, proofreading, procedure-auditing, and extensive recordkeeping
- SQF, GMP, HACCP training and knowledge are considered assets
